Why Bother With the Bible?

5 Day Devotional

This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, April 19, 2026. By exploring Scripture and reflecting on its messages, we'll delve into the central theme of relying on the Bible not as a supplement, but as a vital component of surviving and thriving in our spiritual lives.

Day 1

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Today, we start by understanding the foundational truth that all Scripture is "God-breathed." This means it is not just text on a page, but the living expression of God's intentional communication with us. Just as God’s breath gives life, His Word provides spiritual sustenance that equips us for every good work. This understanding transforms our perspective on the Bible from a passive book of rules to an active guide for our lives.

Engaging with Scripture is crucial for navigating the complexities of life. In a world saturated with information yet starved for truth, the Word of God offers clarity and direction. By embracing it consistently, we open ourselves up to teaching, correction, and growth, which are essential for our spiritual journey and daily life. Our challenge is to integrate these truths into our everyday experiences, allowing God's Word to shape our thoughts, actions, and decisions.

  • How have you previously viewed the Bible in your life?

  • What steps can you take to engage more consistently with Scripture?

  • In what areas do you need correction or growth that Scripture can address?

  • Pray for a renewed hunger for God's Word.

  • Ask God to reveal areas where His Word can strengthen your spiritual journey.

Day 2

Matthew 4:4

On our second day, we draw inspiration from Jesus' response to temptation. At His most vulnerable moment, Jesus relied on Scripture as His weapon against the enemy’s attacks. His use of the phrase "Man shall not live on bread alone" reminds us that our spiritual well-being is sustained through God’s Word, not just physical sustenance.

This passage urges us to evaluate how we feed our souls. Like Jesus, we face daily challenges and temptations that test our strength. Scripture provides the spiritual nourishment we need to stand firm. Recognizing it as essential for survival, we must prioritize regular engagement with the Bible, allowing it to fortify us against life's trials.

  • How do you handle spiritual trials and temptations in your life?

  • In what ways can Scripture be your spiritual nourishment?

  • What steps will you take to consistently include Scripture in your daily routine?

  • Ask God to help you rely on His Word during times of temptation.

  • Pray for wisdom to discern truth from falsehood in your daily life.

Day 3

Luke 1:1-4

Today, we reflect on Luke's commitment to documenting the life of Jesus with precision and accuracy. He didn’t aim to entertain but to provide certainty to those seeking the truth. This intentionality illustrates the reliability and trustworthiness of Scripture as a historical document of God’s dealings with humanity.

As we seek spiritual certainty amidst life's uncertainties, the Bible stands as a dependable source of truth. It invites us to delve into its depths to understand God's character and His intentions for our lives. With each passage we study, we move from guessing to knowing, replacing doubts with divine assurance.

  • What uncertainties do you face that Scripture can help address?

  • How can you strengthen your trust in the reliability of the Bible?

  • What will you do to cultivate a relationship with Scripture and eliminate doubt?

  • Pray for a deeper belief in the truth and reliability of God’s Word.

  • Seek God’s guidance in understanding the certainty of His promises.

Day 4

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Returning to the promise of Scripture being "God-breathed," we examine its purpose in teaching and training in righteousness. This function of Scripture is not merely academic; it’s practical. It actively shapes our character to align with God’s design, equipping us thoroughly for every good work.

Our challenge is to not just read the Bible but to allow it to transform us. As we engage faithfully with Scripture, we become receptive to its rebukes and corrections, fostering growth in areas where we may be weak or misguided. Embrace this process of transformation and trust that God’s Word will equip you for His purposes.

  • Are you open to correction and guidance when engaging with Scripture?

  • How can you apply the teachings of the Bible to your everyday actions?

  • What does being thoroughly equipped by Scripture mean to you?

  • Pray for an open heart to receive correction from God’s Word.

  • Ask for strength to live out the Bible’s teachings in your daily life.

Day 5

Matthew 4:4

Our journey concludes with another look at the wilderness test, where Jesus relied on Scripture to combat temptation. This passage compels us to consider the vitality of God’s Word as essential for life, likened to bread. It is a daily need that ensures our spiritual well-being and defense against adversities.

The Bible is not supplemental; it is survival. Let this truth anchor your heart as you go forward. In moments of weakness, lean into Scripture’s strength. As you step into any new challenge or opportunity, remember that God’s Word is the foundation upon which you stand, providing the direction and reassurance you need.

  • How has this devotional challenged your understanding of Scripture?

  • In what ways has Scripture become your essential spiritual nourishment?

  • How will you commit to engaging with God’s Word moving forward?

  • Thank God for the sustaining power of His Word in your life.

  • Pray for continued desire and dedication to studying Scripture daily.
