Why Bother Surrender

5 Day Devotional

This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from this weekend. Together, we will explore the profound implications of the resurrection and its impact on our daily lives. Each day, we'll examine scripture and reflect on how the resurrection power of Jesus shapes our faith and actions.

Day 1

Colossians 1:15–17

The theme of today revolves around understanding our origins and purposes in Christ. If all things were made through and for Him, then our lives are not accidents. The feeling of striving for self created purposes can leave us exhausted and hollow. True fulfillment comes not from our manufactured identities but in the surrender to the divine design of our Creator. By relinquishing our self-centric control, we're invited to rest in the assurance that we were crafted with intention and love. What does the resurrection of Jesus mean to you personally?

  • Reflect on how society often tells us to build our identity through achievements and self-promotion. This day invites you to consider how God’s purpose for your life is a consistent, unchanging foundation, unlike the fragile structures we construct ourselves.

  • What aspects of your life are you trying to control rather than surrendering to God's plan? How does believing in a purpose designed by God change your perspective on daily struggles? In what ways can you realign your life to reflect that you were made "through Him and for Him"?

  • Pray for the strength to let go of self-manufactured purposes and embrace God’s design. Ask for clarity to see and trust in the path God has prepared for you.

Day 2

Ephesians 2:10

Today's scripture calls us "God’s handiwork," a masterpiece crafted with care and purpose. This poetic language challenges us to recognize the divine craftsmanship in our lives. It confronts the common fear that life is just random chance, replacing it with the comfort of knowing we were designed with specific intent and good works in mind. Each of us has a path prepared by God, waiting to be discovered through surrender, not effort.

Reflect on how God has already marked out a path of “good works” for you—how freeing it is that our purpose exists beyond our personal achievements. The essence of surrender is trusting in that preordained journey, letting go of the futile attempts to fabricate significance on our own.

  • What does being "God's handiwork" mean to you personally?

  • How can you embrace the idea of discovering rather than manufacturing purpose? Are there areas in your life where you feel like an "accident" rather than "poem"? How can today's scripture change that view?

  • Ask God to help you understand and embrace your identity as His masterpiece. Pray for courage to follow the path of good works that God has prepared for you.

Day 3

Colossians 1:18–20

The continuation of Paul's letter to the Colossians paints a vivid picture of Christ as the head of the body, the church. In surrendering our lives to Him, we align ourselves with the source of life and purpose. We are drawn into a greater narrative, where surrender doesn’t strip us of individuality but redeems and fulfills it. Understanding Christ's centrality assures us that our lives are not only meant for individuality but also for community and restoration.

This passage challenges us to redefine how we see surrender—not as defeat, but as a means through which God’s order is restored in our lives. God, as the reconciler of all, offers us peace and wholeness in exchange for our willingness to let go of control.

  • How do you view the role of Christ as the head of your life?

  • What changes in your understanding of purpose when you see it as part of a larger community?

  • In what ways can you embrace the idea that even struggles are part of God’s reconciling work?

  • Pray for a deeper understanding of your identity within the body of Christ.

  • Reflect on areas in your life where you can invite Jesus to bring peace and reconciliation.

Day 4

Ephesians 2:8-9

The journey of surrender is not earned by merit but is a gift of grace. Paul reminds us that grace is the gateway to living a life aligned with divine purpose. It alleviates the burden of thinking that our value is dependent on works or efforts. It's by grace that we find our purpose, and it is through faith that we receive it. Acknowledging that Christ’s work on the cross was sufficient frees us from the cycle of self-justification and exhaustion.

Consider how often we strive for significance through our achievements, believing our worth is tied to personal accomplishments. God's grace invites us into a new narrative, one where our identity is secured, and our life has meaning, not by what we do but by who He is.

  • In what areas of your life are you relying on your efforts instead of God’s grace?

  • How does embracing grace change the way you view your identity and purpose?

  • Reflect on moments where God’s grace has been evident in your life.

  • Thank God for the gift of grace and pray for the ability to accept it fully.

  • Seek God's guidance to release self-reliance and embrace faith in His

Day 5

Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus’ invitation to find rest in Him is the culmination of our week's reflection on surrender. Approaching life from a stance of surrender is an open invitation to lay down burdens and find rest. Christ promises that His yoke is easy and His burden is light, reassuring us that surrendering control leads not to chaos but to peace. The act of surrender is transformative, bringing freedom and rest to those who are weary from striving under their own strength.

Reflect on how surrendering to Christ’s leadership allows true rest—physically, spiritually, and emotionally. It liberates us from the relentless pursuit of self-made purposes, guiding us instead toward His peace and presence.

  • How can you incorporate rest and surrender into your daily routines?

  • What burdens are you carrying that Christ invites you to lay down?

  • How does seeing Jesus as a source of rest change your view of surrender?

  • Pray for the courage to accept Christ's invitation to rest and surrender control.

  • Seek peace in God's promise of rest, trusting in His guidance.
