Why Bother With the Church?
5 Day Devotional
This five-day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, April 26, 2026. We will explore the essence and significance of the church in our spiritual journey, providing insight and reflections on how we can truly belong to a community that spurs us toward love and good works.
Day 1
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12
In our opening day, we reflect on the wisdom that two are better than one. The scripture invites us to recognize that isolation weakens us, while community fortifies our strength. The verse highlights the simple truth of needing support, especially during trying times. We often imagine that facing life alone demonstrates strength, but true resilience is found alongside others.
As you ponder this, consider how aligning yourself with a community equipped with love and understanding amplifies the spirit of God within you. Alone, we struggle, but together we thrive— mirroring the church as an essential part of our faith journey, not an optional extra.
How have you experienced the strength that comes from community?
Why do you think God emphasizes the importance of fellowship?
What steps can you take to be more present in your faith community?
Pray for courage to embrace community despite past hurt.
Ask God to reveal the importance of companionship in your spiritual growth.
Day 2
Hebrews 10:24–25
Today’s scripture urges us not to abandon meeting together, but to spur one another toward love and good deeds. The act of gathering as believers is more than attendance; it is about active participation in each other’s spiritual journeys. Our growth isn't solitary—it's catalyzed by the encouragement and provocation from those who walk alongside us.
As we gather in unity with a heart attuned to relationship over ritual, we not only foster individual growth but also fortify the collective power of the church. Your presence matters, and so does your participation. We are called to inspire and challenge each other in love, because faith flourishes within the bond of believers.
What is the role of community in your personal faith journey?
How have you benefited from encouragement received in a church setting?
In what ways can you encourage others to grow in their walk with God?
Pray for a heart open to receiving and giving encouragement.
Ask for God’s guidance in your role within the church community.
Day 3
Acts 2:42–47
Acts reveals to us the beauty of a community devoted to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer. This divine blueprint for the church shows a shared life where everyone gives and receives as needed. It’s not merely a gathering, but a bonding—a familial commitment one to another that transcends casual connections.
The early church's simplicity and fervor is a model for us today. Their eagerness led to growth— spiritual and numerically. An authentic community, one that lives out these principles, doesn't just impact its members but radiates outwardly, drawing others into its warmth and purpose.
What elements of the Acts church do you see reflected in your own community?
How can our modern-day church replicate the early church's commitment to fellowship?
In what ways can you contribute to fostering genuine community at your church?
Pray for a revival of commitment and authenticity within your church.
Ask God to help you embody the principles of the early church.
Day 4
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12
The scripture today speaks to us about the strength found in numbers. This passage underlines the necessity of support, especially during life’s inevitable challenges. The church was not a man-made institution but a sacred design intended to echo the divine call for unity and mutual support.
In embracing this teaching, we acknowledge that reaching out and offering our strength to others aligns us with God's vision. We are made to support and to be supported, reflecting a cord of three strands that binds us strong. This is the essence of church—an essential part of true discipleship.
Reflect on a time when church community helped you through a difficult period.
What steps can you take to strengthen the bonds within your faith community?
Why do you think God values community so highly in spiritual life?
Pray for wisdom in nurturing relationships within your church community.
Ask God to guide you in being a source of strength for someone today.
Day 5
Hebrews 10:24–25
Our devotional journey concludes with a revisitation of this passage that urges us toward love and collective encouragement. We are reminded that the act of gathering is not ritualistic, but relational —integral to our spiritual DNA. Consistent engagement strengthens the family and ourselves.
The church is, metaphorically, a giant tapestry threaded with diverse lives and stories. When we commit to this collective, we affirm our role within God’s creative work. Your presence is not only desired but essential—reflecting eternity's design here and now.
What does being an integral part of a church family mean to you?
How do you envision contributing to the health and growth of your church?
What are some barriers that need to be removed to fully engage with your church community?
Pray for the courage to deepen your commitment to your church family.
Ask God to reveal specific ways you can contribute to your community's health and vibrancy.
