Lent at United

Join us for 40 days of prayer and fasting

What is Lent?

Lent is a forty-day season of reflection, fasting, and renewal, beginning on Ash Wednesday and leading to Easter. The name comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning "lengthen," referencing spring’s longer days. It mirrors Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, where He fasted and prayed.

For centuries, Christians have observed Lent through repentance, fasting, and acts of service. Today, it remains a time for us to deepen our faith by giving something up and drawing closer to God. Each Sunday in Lent is a "mini-Easter," where we eagerly anticipate Jesus' resurrection.

How to Participate in Lent

One of the key ways to engage in Lent is through fasting, a practice of surrender that deepens our dependence on God.

Weekday Fast

Consider eliminating or minimizing meat, eggs, dairy, alcohol, and oil.

Weekends

Feast on weekends as a day of celebration during the Lenten season.

Good Friday

Observe a complete fast, consuming only water or skipping meals.

Holy Saturday

Feast as we enter Resurrection Sunday and celebrate Jesus’ return.

If you have experience fasting, consider a juice fast or a water-only fast—just be sure to consult with your doctor first. First time fasting? Try skipping a meal or giving up certain foods.

Fasting it not required for children, the elderly, and those with health conditions that make fasting unsafe. If you can’t fast from food, sacrifice something that challenges you for 40 days.
