The Two-Sided Coin: Grace AND Truth

5 Day Devotional

This five-day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, January 18, 2026. Join us as we explore the themes of grace and truth found in Scripture, and how they form the core of our understanding of Jesus' character. Each day, we'll focus on a different aspect, bridging Scripture with personal reflection and prayer.

Day 1

Scripture: Scripture: John 1:14

Our journey begins with John’s profound introduction of Jesus — the Word made flesh, full of grace and truth. John does not describe a Jesus divided between two values but embodies them both. For many, the concept of Jesus as both gracious and truthful challenges our innate preference for one over the other. This duality is the very essence of His nature and, as we delve deeper, it's essential to appreciate this balance in our spiritual lives.

Understanding grace and truth as inseparable is crucial. When we attempt to prioritize one over the other, we risk misrepresenting the true nature of Christ. His grace does not dilute His truth, nor does His truth minimize His grace. Together, they reveal the full picture of God's love and justice.

  • Reflect on how you perceive Jesus in your life. Which side do you lean towards: grace or truth?

  • Consider moments where grace or truth has impacted your personal growth. How did they shape you?

  • How can embracing both grace and truth lead to deeper relationships in your community?

  • Pray for the wisdom to embrace both grace and truth in your daily interactions.

  • Ask for the discernment to understand and reflect the full character of Jesus.

Day 2

Scripture: John 8:1-11

Today's focus brings us to a poignant moment in Jesus' ministry — His encounter with the woman caught in adultery. In this narrative, Jesus exemplifies the harmonious balance of grace and truth. He neither condemns nor condones but invites change through compassion and clarity. This account challenges us to consider our reactions when grace and truth collide.

As followers of Christ, we're called to mirror His approach. Grace provides safety, allowing vulnerability, while truth offers the path to transformative change. By welcoming both into our lives, we make space for personal growth and authentic community connection.

  • How can this story of grace and truth shape your understanding of forgiveness?

  • What lessons about judgment and mercy does this narrative offer in today’s divided society?

  • Identify areas in your life where you might need to show more grace or truth.

  • Pray for insight into balancing grace and truth in your interactions.

  • Seek strength to embody Jesus' response to situations of conflict and misunderstanding.

Day 3

Scripture: John 3:16-17

John's Gospel clearly states the purpose of Jesus' coming — out of love, not condemnation. The profound truth is that while we were yet sinners, grace reached us. The narrative of grace and truth not only displays the depths of God's love but also underscores the purpose behind it: redemption and renewal.

This foundational belief should guide our interactions and shape our witness to others, emphasizing the transformative love of Jesus that invites open hearts to change and grow.

  • Reflect on how grasping this truth deepens your relationship with God.

  • Consider the challenges you've faced in sharing this grace-filled message with others.

  • How does understanding divine love influence your own capacity to love unconditionally?

  • Pray for a deeper understanding of God’s unending love and commitment to transformation.

  • Ask for courage to share this love with authenticity and compassion.

Day 4

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17-18

This passage reiterates the power of being made new in Christ. The invitation to transformation is rooted in grace, making us agents of reconciliation through truth. As new creations, we are empowered to demonstrate the seamless blend of grace and truth, providing a living testimony of Jesus’ transformative power.

This message is a reminder that our lives should reflect the holistic character of Christ, bridging the gap between deity's calling and earthly enactment, showcasing the depth and breadth of God’s redemptive work.

  • In what ways can you witness to others about being made new through grace and truth?

  • How does this new identity influence your day-to-day actions and decisions?

  • What steps can you take to cultivate a lifestyle that embraces this reconciliatory mission?

  • Pray for the courage to embody your new identity in Christ.

  • Seek opportunities to act as a vessel of reconciliation in your community.

Day 5

Scripture: Colossians 3:12-14

The Apostle Paul urges us in Colossians to embody traits that resonate with the character of Jesus: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These virtues are the practical outworking of living a life full of grace and truth. Embracing these qualities enables us to reflect Christ’s character effectively as we interact with those around us.

This final day reinforces the call to live out the principles discussed throughout the week, ensuring the lessons of grace and truth seamlessly integrate into our daily routines and interpersonal connections.

  • How do these virtues manifest in your relationships and community?

  • In what area of your life could you apply more kindness and patience?

  • How can living these traits help you reflect Jesus more faithfully?

  • Pray for the continual renewal of your heart to embody these Christ-like qualities.

  • Ask for the strength to maintain unity and love with those around you, despite differences.
