A Consistent Christian Ethic: From the Womb to the Welfare Line

5 Day Devotional

This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, February 1, 2026. We will journey through the themes of compassion, dignity, and seeing others through the eyes of Jesus, inspired by the passages explored during the sermon.

Day 1

Scripture: Psalm 139:13-16

The foundation of our identity and value is that we are fearfully and wonderfully made by God.Before we could contribute anything to the world, God knew us and loved us. This truth is thecornerstone of understanding that human dignity begins with God’s intentional creation, not ouraccomplishments or status.

Recognizing that every life is seen and valued by God means that our own purpose is not to assignworth but to acknowledge the inherent worth already given by God. This calls us to reflect on howwe view ourselves and others, reminding us of our call to love and value all humanity as God does.

  • How do you perceive your own worth in light of being fearfully and wonderfully made by God?

  • In what ways can you practice seeing the inherent value in others this week?

  • What steps can you take to let God’s perspective reshape how you see yourself and thosearound you?

  • Pray for a deeper understanding of your own worth and identity as a creation of God.

  • Ask God for the ability to see others as He does, with inherent worth and dignity.

Day 2

Scripture: Matthew 25:31-40

Jesus teaches us that compassion should be an active response to the needs of the vulnerablebecause, in serving them, we serve Him. This story calls us to immediate, visible action that reflectsour faith and discipleship. Our lives should be a testament to our willingness to respond to Jesus’call to see and serve the least among us.

It is not enough to simply believe in compassionate ideas; we must embody them in our interactionswith others. Jesus’ identification with the vulnerable challenges us to demonstrate our valuesthrough actions, impacting both us and those we encounter as tangible expressions of Christ’s love.

  • Reflect on ways you have responded to those in need around you. What has inspired you, andwhat holds you back?

  • How can you be more attuned to seeing opportunities to serve as examples of Christ’s love?

  • Who in your life challenges you to move from intention to action, and how can you start today?

  • Seek guidance in identifying where Jesus is calling you to act in compassion today.

  • Pray for courage to respond to opportunities to serve others, seeing them as serving Christ.

Day 3

Scripture: Proverbs 31:8-9

Our voices are powerful when used for those who have none. The Bible calls us to speak and judgerighteously, using our influence to defend those who are most vulnerable. This Biblical mandate asksus to consider how we utilize our words in everyday life to uplift and support the silent or oppressed.

Engaging with wisdom means aligning our words with God’s justice and compassion, ensuring ourspeech is not self-serving but serves others. As stewards of God’s message, our words and actionsmust intersect to reflect His love and righteousness.

  • How can you use your voice to advocate for the rights of the vulnerable?

  • What practical steps can you take to ensure your words are aligned with God’s righteousness?

  • Reflect on a time when you used your voice effectively; what was the outcome?

  • Ask God for the wisdom and bravery to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

  • Pray for opportunities to use your voice for justice in your community.

Day 4

Scripture: Luke 10:25-37

The parable of The Good Samaritan illustrates the essence of true neighborliness, breaking culturaland social barriers through acts of kindness and compassion. The Samaritan's actions redefine the concept of a neighbor, inviting us to love beyond boundaries and convenience.

Jesus challenges us to expand our definition of community and to be prepared to act selflessly inlove. When true compassion disrupts our plans, it mirrors the love Christ shows each of us, asking usto ‘go and do likewise,’ ensuring our faith is lived out authentically.

  • How can you embody neighborly love in your actions today?

  • Who might Jesus be asking you to see and serve that you have overlooked?

  • What barriers do you need to overcome to extend compassion to those different from you?

  • Pray for the courage to love beyond convenience and discomfort.

  • Ask God to help you see where you can be a good neighbor today and in the future.

Day 5

Scripture: Psalm 139:13-16

Returning to where our journey began, we reflect on the awe-inspiring truth that God's love andcreative intention are at the core of our being. Understanding this helps us to reframe how we viewourselves in relation to God and to others. Our identity is rooted in the Creator's love, marking us asvaluable beyond measure.

This realization propels us into ongoing growth and formation, urging us to live by the values ofcompassion and dignity that Jesus modeled. Our lives are a testament to God's intricate design, calling us to reflect His compassion and pursue His justice.

  • How can you embrace your God-given identity more fully in your daily life?

  • Think about how an awareness of being wonderfully made has impacted your relationships andactions.

  • What small steps can you take to ensure your life is a reflection of God's compassionatedesign?

  • Pray for continued growth in trusting God's design and purpose for your life.

  • Ask God to reveal ways you can honor His intentional creation in yourself and others.
