Why Bother With Obedience?

5 Day Devotional

This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, May 3, 2026. We will explore the importance of obedience in our daily lives, understand the motives behind our actions, and embrace a life transformed through faith and love for God.

Day 1

John 14:15

Our first day delves into the motive of obedience. Jesus tells us, "If you love me, keep my commands." Obedience stems from affection, not obligation. It is important to understand that our action is a reflection of our relationship with Him. God’s love is not conditional upon our actions; rather, our obedience is a display of heartfelt love. When love motivates us, obedience becomes not a chore, but a response to His grace. A life aligned with God's commands reflects His love and grace to the world. The challenge lies in recognizing areas where we resist this love-driven obedience due to worldly distractions. Yet, returning to the essence of His simple command can transform our daily walk into one of vibrant faith and profound obedience.

  • What areas of your life show your love through obedience to God?

  • How can you shift your perspective to view obedience as a response to love, not an obligation?

  • In what ways have you experienced God's love through obedience?

  • Pray for insight into loving God through your daily actions.

  • Ask God to reveal any area in your life that resists His commands.

Day 2

Romans 6:1-2

Today, we explore the logic of obedience. With grace freely given, Paul poses the question: should we continue in sin to let grace increase? By no means. Understanding our identity in Christ is crucial. Through baptism, we symbolically die to our old selves and rise to live a new life. Our past chains are broken, yet we often forget and live as though still bound. Embracing our new identity in Christ calls for consistent living reflective of our spiritual transformation. The logic of obedience is not about restriction but about freeing ourselves from the past's bondage so we may fully live in God’s image. A transformed life, rooted in the logic of grace, is a testament to God’s resurrecting power within us.

  • What are some old habits that hinder you from living your new life?

  • How can understanding your identity in Christ help you remain obedient?

  • What steps can you take to live consistently with your identity in Christ?

  • Pray for a deep understanding of your new identity in Christ.

  • Ask God to give you strength to break away from old patterns that don’t align with His will.

Day 3

Romans 12:1-2

On this day, we consider the lifestyle that comes with obedience. Paul urges us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices. It’s about embracing a lifestyle shaped by God’s mercy, and actively pursuing renewal of the mind. The call is to resist passive conformity to the world and seek active transformation through God’s love. It requires us to detach from external pressures and align internally with God's word. A transformed mind leads to a transformed life—a life that not only resists sin but also radiates divine purpose and joy. True transformation stems from gratitude for God’s mercy and recognition that every part of our life can be an expression of worship.

  • How does offering your life as a living sacrifice manifest in your daily routines?

  • What worldly patterns do you need to resist to allow for transformation?

  • In what ways can you actively renew your mind according to God’s word?

  • Pray for strength to resist conformity and choose transformation.

  • Seek God’s guidance in making your life an act of worship.

Day 4

Romans 6:16

Today, we address the selective morality problem. Often, obedience is practiced selectively, following commands that align conveniently with our lives while neglecting others. Paul believes that whom we obey dictates who truly masters us. Obedience is not about adding a master but choosing the rightful one who leads to life and righteousness. Selective morality breeds conflict within ourselves. Consistent, sincere obedience means aligning our entire lives, even the uncomfortable parts, with God's will. Reflection on who or what masters us can bring clarity in decision-making and prioritization of God’s commands above all else as a higher calling.

  • Are there areas in your life where you practice selective morality?

  • How does selective morality affect your relationship with God and others?

  • What changes can you make to ensure you choose Jesus as your master in all aspects of life?

  • Pray for clarity on masters you've unknowingly adhered to.

  • Ask God for courage to embrace His lordship in all areas of your life.

Day 5

Romans 12:1-2

Our final day brings us full circle to why obedience matters. Belief without obedience is simply opinion. True faith requires action stemming from a heart transformed by love. Baptism signifies public obedience, a declaration of living in step with God. More than ceremonies, obedience is a lifestyle choice, and neglecting it means missing the full potential of life with Christ. The challenge is moving from admiration to allegiance. An honest assessment of areas we've been selectively obedient in can trigger genuine transformation. We are called to stop negotiating with God and start full-heartedly trusting His guidance, leading to true freedom and a compelling witness to others.

  • What does it mean for you to move from admiration of Jesus to allegiance?

  • How does your life currently serve as a testament to your allegiance to Christ?

  • Where is God calling you for more robust obedience and transformation?

  • Pray for discernment in recognizing areas of life needing true allegiance.

  • Commit in prayer to embrace a life of holistic obedience.
