God’s Unlikely Choice Devotional

5 Day Devotional

This five-day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, June 29th. We will explore the transformative power of encountering Jesus, reflecting on how it can redeem our past and redefine our future, just as seen in the story of Saul's conversion.

Day 1

Scripture: Acts 9:1-19a

As we reflect on the beginning of Saul’s journey, we see a man who was vehemently opposed to the teachings of Jesus. Saul, filled with hatred and zeal, persecuted the early church, believing he was fulfilling God’s will. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. This moment highlights the theme of redemption—the idea that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace, and that encountering Christ can radically change the trajectory of our lives. Just as Saul’s story showcases a profound transformation, our journeys may also demonstrate how God’s love can heal the deepest wounds and redirect our paths toward His purpose.

As we contemplate our own lives, we are reminded that we, too, have the capacity for change. What is stopping us from allowing God to work in our lives? Are we willing to surrender our past mistakes to Him and embrace the new identity He offers? How can I be more open to divine interruptions in my life?

  • What aspects of my past am I struggling to surrender to God?

  • How can I allow God's grace to transform my perspective on my mistakes?

  • In what ways does the story of Saul resonate with my own life experiences?

  • Pray and ask God to reveal areas in your life that need His redeeming touch.

  • Reflect on your identity in Christ and how it contrasts with past labels.

Day 2

Scripture: Acts 9:1-6

The confrontation between Saul and Jesus on the road to Damascus serves as a powerful moment of reckoning. Saul's intense opposition crumbled in the face of divine light, illustrating how an encounter with the living Christ can bring about a profound shift in understanding. This moment is not just about Saul’s transformation; it invites us all to reflect on the ways we might resist God's intervention in our lives. We must recognize that our perceived certainties may blind us from seeing the truth of who God is and what He desires for us. Just like Saul, we may find ourselves clinging to old beliefs that confine us instead of embracing the freedom found in Christ.

When we invite Jesus into our hearts, we open ourselves to a new perspective—one of hope and possibility. This requires us to acknowledge our limitations and to willingly follow the path that He sets before us. The question remains: will we embrace this new journey, even if it challenges us to let go of old ways?

  • What are some 'old beliefs' I need to let go of to accept God’s new direction?

  • How can I be more open to the ways God might be leading me today?

  • In what areas of my life do I need a change of perspective?

  • Pray for clarity in your understanding of God’s will for your life.

  • Seek God’s guidance to break free from old patterns that hold you back.

Day 3

Scripture: Acts 9:7-9

After his encounter with Jesus, Saul experienced three days of darkness. This period served as a physical manifestation of his spiritual blindness. The Lord allowed Saul to face this humbling experience to prepare him for the greater calling ahead. In our lives, God sometimes leads us through seasons of uncertainty and introspection. These moments may feel uncomfortable but are essential for our growth. Just as Saul was stripped of his sense of control, we, too, must learn to surrender our lives to God’s timing and trust His process for transformation.

Despite the discomfort, these moments can cultivate a fertile ground for growth, enabling us to see God’s truth more clearly. As we seek to understand the depth of our spiritual blindness, we can begin to remove the scales from our eyes and embrace the clarity of God’s vision for our lives.

  • What could God be teaching me during my own 'dark' periods?

  • How do I respond when I feel stripped of my control?

  • In what ways can I cultivate patience as I await God's instruction?

  • Pray for strength to trust God during difficult times.

  • Reflect on past challenges where you have seen God’s faithfulness.

Day 4

Scripture: Acts 9:10-15

God’s plan for Saul included a pivotal role for Ananias, underscoring the importance of community and support in transformation. Ananias was understandably hesitant, knowing Saul’s past. Yet, God reassured him of the purpose behind His command. This narrative teaches us that God often calls us to step outside our comfort zones and to believe in the potential for change in others, even those who may seem farthest from Him. Ananias’ willingness to obey led to a miraculous moment of healing and empowerment for Saul.

In our lives, we are called to be instruments of God’s grace. To reach out to those who may be struggling and to encourage them in their journey toward God. Our obedience can facilitate monumental change—not just in ourselves, but in the lives of others as well. Recognizing the role we play in God’s mission can inspire us to act in faith, trusting that He can redeem even the most unlikely individuals.

  • How can I be open to being used by God to impact someone else's life?

  • What fears do I need to overcome to extend grace to others?

  • In what ways can I be an Ananias to someone in need of healing?

  • Pray for discernment in understanding how to serve others.

  • Ask God to show you someone who needs encouragement and support.

Day 5

Scripture: Acts 9:16-19a

Saul's transformation marked the beginning of a powerful mission that changed the course of history. His past was not merely erased; it was integrated into a new purpose that God had designed for him. This pivotal moment teaches us that our past experiences, regardless of how painful or shameful, can be repurposed for God’s glory. Just like Saul, we all have a unique story to tell that can testify to God’s redemptive power.

As we conclude our devotional, we are reminded to embrace our identity in Christ—one that is not defined by our past but empowered by our future in Him. Are we willing to step into the new purpose God has for us? As we reflect on Saul’s calling, we can boldly ask ourselves, "What is God calling me to do beyond my past?" By embracing this transformative journey, we can become vessels of His grace, bringing light to the world around us.

  • What fresh purpose is God revealing to me today?

  • How can I share my story to inspire others toward God’s love?

  • What steps can I take to move beyond my past?

  • Pray for courage to embrace your new identity in Christ.

  • Seek God's guidance on how to walk in your new purpose.Rewatch the Sermon
