Been Taken for Granted Devotional

5 Day Devotional

This five-day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, May 11th. We will explore the themes of feeling taken for granted and finding our worth in God's eyes, reflecting on the journey of Jesus and our own experiences of serving and being served.

Day 1

Scripture: Luke 17:11-19

As we reflect on the story of the ten lepers, we are reminded of how easy it is to overlook those who serve us. In our daily lives, we often are quick to take for granted the blessings we receive, forgetting to pause and express gratitude. This passage illustrates the importance of acknowledging the kindness we receive and highlights Jesus’ ability to see and value those often overlooked by society. The one leper who returned to thank Jesus symbolizes how we should strive to recognize and appreciate acts of love and generosity.

It’s vital to remember that our journey of faith is not only about receiving blessings but also about cultivating a heart of gratitude. When we express thanks, we align ourselves with the values of the Kingdom of God, which encourages acknowledgment and love for one another. Let us be intentional in practicing gratitude, both toward God and the people around us who are often taken for granted.

  • Who in your life can you express gratitude to this week?

  • When was a time you felt genuinely appreciated, and how did it impact you?

  • How can you cultivate a habit of gratitude in your daily life?

  • Pray for a heart of gratitude and awareness of the blessings in your life.

  • Ask God to help you recognize those who serve you and to express your appreciation.

Day 2

Scripture: Luke 6:31

In this day of devotion, we focus on the golden rule: "Do to others as you would have them do to you." This scripture challenges us to put ourselves in the shoes of others and consider their feelings. When we live by this principle, we are more likely to see the value in each person and the sacrifices they make. It calls us to treat others with kindness and respect, emphasizing the importance of gratitude and acknowledgment in our relationships.

Your actions speak volumes about how you appreciate others. In a world where many feel overlooked, your intentionality in expressing gratitude can have profound effects. By extending kindness and recognizing their efforts, you not only uplift others but also contribute to a culture of appreciation, allowing everyone to feel seen and valued.

  • How do you currently show appreciation to those around you?

  • Who needs your kindness today, and how can you show it?

  • Are there areas where you may be taking others for granted?

  • Pray for opportunities to serve and appreciate others genuinely.

  • Seek guidance on how to be a source of encouragement in your community.

Day 3

Scripture: Matthew 6:1-4

This devotional highlights a critical aspect of our service: the heart behind our actions. Jesus warns against performing acts of righteousness for human recognition. Instead, we are called to focus on serving with genuine love, seeking God’s approval rather than the applause of others. This perspective is vital in combating feelings of being taken for granted—by reminding us that our value lies in how God sees us.

  • What motivates you to serve others, and how can you shift your focus to God’s approval?

  • Can you identify a recent act of kindness you performed? How did it make you feel?

  • How can you be more intentional in serving without expectation?

  • Thank God for the opportunity to serve others without seeking recognition.

  • Ask Him to reveal to you the beauty of selfless service and its impact.

Day 4

Scripture: Galatians 6:9

In this reflection, we focus on the importance of perseverance in doing good, especially when our efforts seem unrecognized. The scripture reminds us not to grow weary in doing well, for in due time, we will reap a harvest if we do not lose heart. This promise serves as encouragement for those moments when our service feels unappreciated.

It’s easy to feel disheartened when our good deeds go unnoticed; however, God knows and values every act of kindness, regardless of earthly recognition. It is essential to trust the timing of God’s reward while remaining steadfast in our commitment to serve. Each action taken in love contributes to His Kingdom and is eternally significant, even if it goes unseen in the moment.

  • Reflect on a time when you felt exhausted from serving. How did you cope?

  • What motivates you to keep doing good, even when it feels discouraging?

  • How can you encourage someone else who may feel weary in their service?

  • Pray for strength and renewed passion in your service.

  • Ask God to help you remember the eternal significance of your actions.

Day 5

Scripture: Psalms 139:1-14

As we conclude this devotional, we are reminded of the profound truth that God sees us intimately. The psalmist shares how God knows everything about us, illustrating that our worth is inherent because of His love for us. When feelings of being taken for granted creep in, we can anchor ourselves in this truth—recognizing that we are valued and cherished by our Creator.

God’s understanding of our hearts and the sacrifices we make provides a comforting reminder that we are never truly invisible. He sees our pain, our devotion, and our struggles. Therefore, as we continue to serve others, we can abide in this truth, finding solace and renewed strength from knowing we are fully known and deeply loved by God.

  • In what ways do you feel God’s intimate presence in your life?

  • How does knowing that God sees you impact the way you serve others?

  • What steps can you take to embrace God’s love and validation in your life?

  • Thank God for His understanding and presence in your life.

  • Ask Him to help you embrace your worth and value as His beloved child.
