How to Witness When You're Afraid: Overcoming Fear in Evangelism
5 Day Devotional
This five-day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, August 3. We will explore the transformative power of Jesus and how witnessing to others becomes an overflow of our personal relationship with Him.
Day 1
Scripture: Acts 9:19b-22
As we reflect on the extraordinary transformation of Saul into Paul, we are reminded of the radical change that an encounter with Jesus can bring. Saul was a vehement persecutor of Christians, yet after his divine encounter, he became one of the most bold advocates for the faith he once violently opposed. This day, we want to embrace the truth that when Jesus transforms us, we cannot help but share the good news of what He has done in our lives. Just as Saul immediately started proclaiming Jesus, we too are called to witness, no matter what fears may hold us back. Our personal testimony is powerful. It carries the weight of our past while allowing us to share the hope that Jesus has given us for the future. Let us not shy away from sharing our "before and after" stories, as they can be the very thing that opens hearts to the Gospel.
What does your personal transformation story look like?
How can you begin to share your testimony more openly?
Are there any fears holding you back from witnessing to others?
Pray for boldness in sharing your story.
Ask God to bring individuals into your life who need to hear your testimony.
Day 2
Scripture: Acts 9:23-25
Following our transformation, we may encounter resistance, just as Saul did after proclaiming Jesus in the synagogues. The moment we step out in faith, we might face opposition that seeks to silence our voice. This day, reflect on the reality that sharing the message of Christ can come with challenges, and yet, it is through those challenges that our faith can grow and mature. Saul endured threats against his life, but his reliance on the Holy Spirit equipped him to face these trials with courage. Remember that opposition is often a sign that we are making a difference. It can also be a chance for us to dig deeper into our relationship with God and rely on His strength. Let us focus on the power of community, just as Saul did when his followers helped him escape in a basket. Together, we can support one another in the face of adversity.
How do you respond when faced with opposition or fear?
Who are those in your life that can support you in your witness?
What strategies can you use to lean into God during challenging times?
Pray for strength to face any opposition that may come your way.
Ask God to surround you with a supportive community that encourages your witness.
Day 3
Scripture: Acts 9:26-30
Just as Barnabas took a risk to encourage Saul, we are called to be bridge-builders in our own communities. The early church was hesitant to accept Saul, but Barnabas saw beyond his past and recognized the calling on his life. This day, we are challenged to examine our own hearts: Are we willing to extend grace and encouragement to those who may have a troubled history? Being a Barnabas means believing in the potential of others and actively supporting them on their journey. It means looking beyond our own fears and biases to embrace the diverse tapestry of believers that God is weaving. As we nurture relationships, we create a fertile ground for God’s kingdom to flourish.
Who in your life needs encouragement and a second chance?
How can you embody the spirit of Barnabas in your community?
Are there areas where you struggle to see the potential in others?
Pray for a heart that sees others through God's eyes.
Ask God to help you be an agent of encouragement within your community.
Day 4
Scripture: Acts 9:31
The conclusion of Saul’s story in Acts reminds us of the peace that comes when God’s people are obedient. After Saul's departure, the church experienced a time of peace and growth, illustrating that when we eliminate division and embrace unity, God's work can flourish. This day, reflect on the importance of maintaining peace within your church community as we strive to fulfill our God-given mission. Growth is most effective when powered by love, unity, and the Holy Spirit. As we engage with one another in faith, we create an atmosphere where transformation can happen not just individually, but collectively as the body of Christ. We are called to be witnesses of this transformative love, leading to multiplication not just in numbers, but in depth of faith and impact.
How can you promote peace within your church community?
What steps can you take to foster unity amongst believers?
In what ways is God calling you to be a witness within your community?
Pray for unity and peace in your church and among believers.
Ask God to show you opportunities to cultivate healthy relationships with others.
Day 5
Scripture: Acts 9:19b-31
Finally, we come full circle to understand the radical shift that occurs when we surrender our lives to Jesus. The story of Paul teaches us that our witness does not stop with our transformation; it inspires others to seek the same. As we close this devotional, let’s consider how our evidence of faith can trigger a movement of change in our neighborhoods, cities, and beyond. Each of us has a part to play in this mission. As we actively engage with our community, we multiply our influence, impacting lives for Christ. Let us be daring witnesses, overflowing with the love of Jesus, and ignite the passions of others to witness as well. The transformative power of God is at work today, and we are called to be vessels of that very change.
How can you live out your faith in practical ways this week?
Who can you reach out to and share your story with?
In what areas of your life is God challenging you to step out in faith?
Pray for God to open doors for you to share the Gospel.
Ask God to fill you with His Spirit, enabling you to be a powerful witness.
