Exclusion & Embrace Devotional

5 Day Devotional

This five-day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, April 6th. We will explore the themes of unity, inclusion, and the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives as demonstrated in Acts 6, while reflecting on personal stories and struggles.

Day 1

Scripture: Acts 6:1-7

In today's passage, we see the early church grappling with a critical issue: the neglect of the Hellenist widows in the daily distribution of food. This scenario highlights the complexities that arise when a community grows rapidly. With increased numbers come greater demands, and sadly, some voices can get overlooked. The apostles recognized the need to address this issue rather than ignore it, leading to a pivotal moment in the church's development. They called together the community to find a solution that honored both their spiritual commitments and the needs of the marginalized among them.

The core theme here revolves around inclusion and representation, emphasizing that everyone matters in God’s kingdom. By choosing seven men from among those who were being overlooked, the apostles modeled a commitment to diversity and justice. This act of service became a testament to God's provision and unity within the church. How are we continuing this practice today? Are we ensuring that everyone's voice is heard and valued in our communities?

  • How do I contribute to the inclusivity of my community?

  • Have I ever felt like an outsider? How did that shape my faith?

  • What steps can I take to ensure that everyone feels valued in my circle?

  • Ask God to reveal any unconscious biases you may hold.

  • Pray for the courage to be a voice for those who are marginalized.

Day 2

Scripture: Acts 6:1-5

As we continue exploring the text, we note the proactive approach taken by the apostles when confronted with the issues arising in the church. They did not shy away from addressing the complaints of the Hellenists; instead, they actively sought a solution that would involve the entire community. This engagement highlights a critical lesson: leadership isn't about authority but about servanthood. The apostles recognized their calling to prayer and ministry of the Word but also understood the necessity to delegate responsibility appropriately to serve their community effectively.

This passage challenges us to reflect on our perceptions of leadership. Are we open to serving without seeking power? Are we ready to lift others up to leadership roles, recognizing that ministry comes in various forms? By distributing tasks according to gifting, the apostles fostered unity instead of division, demonstrating the beauty of working together in harmony.

  • How can I practice servanthood in my daily life?

  • Who can I support in leading or serving in our church community?

  • What gifts has God placed in me that I can share with others?

  • Pray for wisdom in how to delegate and share responsibilities.

  • Ask for discernment to identify the gifts of others.

Day 3

Scripture: Romans 12:4-6

Moving forward, we encounter the significance of representation in Acts 6's context. The seven chosen to oversee the distribution of food were individuals of good reputation, wisdom, and the Spirit. Their selection was a statement of solidarity with those who had felt marginalized. God’s heart is for justice and unity, and it is powerful to see this principle echoed throughout scripture. In our own lives, how do we mirror this call to inclusivity? We must remember the implications of choosing leaders who reflect the diversity of the community. True representation creates a bridge to understanding and fosters a culture of empathy and support. Even today, as churches strive to be multiethnic and socially relevant, we are challenged to ensure everyone’s story is valued. Are we actively seeking to reflect this in our church structures and community service?

  • Who do I know that represents a different perspective?

  • How can I advocate for more diversity in my church or community?

  • In what ways can I educate myself about the experiences of marginalized groups?

  • Pray for guidance in your efforts toward inclusivity.

  • Ask God to help you appreciate and understand diverse perspectives.

Day 4

Scripture: Galatians 3:28

On this fourth day, we delve into the heart of unity in Christ, as outlined by Paul in Galatians. This text proclaims a revolutionary truth: in Jesus, there is no division among us based on race, gender, or status. The implications of this radical equality must permeate our personal relationships and church communities. Just as the early apostles sought a solution for their growing number of disciples, we must strive for relationships that reject exclusion to promote unity.

As we engage with this truth, we are called to dismantle any barriers that might separate us. What does this look like in practice? It may mean opening our hearts to host conversations around race, learning from each other's experiences, or making a conscious effort to invite those who may feel like outsiders. In doing so, we reflect God's design for His church—a body that operates in harmony, celebrating diversity while being united in purpose.

  • Where do I see division in my community?

  • How can I advocate for unity among those who are different from me?

  • What does being 'one in Christ' mean to me?

  • Ask God for a heart that embraces diversity in the body of Christ.

  • Pray for opportunities to learn from those who differ from you.

Day 5

Scripture: Matthew 28:19-20

As we conclude our devotional, we reflect on the Great Commission, which encapsulates our call to spread the good news of Jesus. As followers of Christ, we are charged with making disciples of all nations, an incredible opportunity to foster unity amidst diversity. This final day challenges us to consider how we can fulfill this sacred mission in our spheres of influence, especially in light of our discussions over the past days concerning inclusion and community.

By embodying God’s love and grace, we become agents of change in a fragmented world. Each act of love, each step toward justice and inclusion, is part of the greater tapestry of God’s kingdom work. Are we committing our lives to this mission? Let us be bold as we seek to live out the Great Commission, forming connections that reflect Christ's radical love for all.

  • In what ways am I obeying the call to make disciples?

  • How can I include others in my mission to spread the love of Jesus?

  • What barriers prevent me from fulfilling this commission?

  • Pray for courage to share your faith with others.

  • Ask God to open opportunities for you to make disciples of all nations.
