Encanto: The Gospel Heals the House You Inherited
5 Day Devotional
This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from Sunday, July 26, 2026. Together, we will explore how the messages shared resonate with our personal journeys and the healing power of the gospel in our family lives.
Day 1
Exodus 34:6-7
Today, we begin by reflecting on the weight of generational patterns that we are often unaware we carry. These patterns, usually formed by unresolved traumas and expectations, shape our perceptions and influence our behaviors. In the sermon, we learned about the ancestral pressures carried in Abuela's story in Encanto, a vivid exemplar of how fear can govern a family's foundation.
The passage from Exodus speaks about God's love and justice, reminding us that unresolved issues are handed down through generations. But we must embrace the truth that we aren't bound by this inheritance. Jesus offers us the possibility of a new beginning, free from past burdens. Let us choose to interrupt this cycle by relying on the transformative power of faith.
Reflect on the generational patterns you have noticed within your family. How have they influenced your life?
Consider ways in which fear has dictated your actions or beliefs. How might faith provide an alternative path?
What steps can you take to address and heal unresolved issues in your life with honesty and grace?
Pray for clarity in recognizing patterns that need breaking.
Ask God for the strength to embrace a new beginning through His guidance.
Day 2
Isaiah 61:1-4
The call of Isaiah to “proclaim freedom for the captives” highlights Jesus's mission on earth to heal and renew us. In the sermon, Pastor spoke about how Jesus declared these words to define His mission, reinforcing that generational patterns do not have to define our future.
No matter how entrenched our struggles appear, Jesus invites us to be restored and transformed. He offers freedom from the past, urging us to rebuild our lives on foundations of love, not fear. He calls us to recognize our own 'cracks' and trust in His promise of healing to live as oaks of righteousness, firmly rooted in His strength.
What specific 'cracks' in your family history need to be named and addressed?
How can the message of freedom in Isaiah encourage you to step into a new pattern?
In what ways can you visualize a family foundation rooted in love rather than fear?
Seek God's wisdom in identifying the 'cracks' you need to confront.
Pray for the courage to step out of old patterns and into a life led by Christ's example.
Day 3
Psalm 127:1
This scripture reminds us that without the Lord as our foundation, our efforts are in vain. Our sermon touched on the importance of relying on God's design over our family's traditional or fearful expectations. The gospel opens up an opportunity for a new framework.
Understanding that true success in family life and personal progress comes from surrendering our plans to Him is essential. As the Madrigal family found their rebuilding in the movie, we too can reconstruct on a foundation built by God Himself, ensuring that the future for our next generations is one of freedom and strength.
What aspects of your life or family tradition have been built on fear?
How can you trust God more fully to guide and rewrite your family’s blueprint?
What changes can you make today to pivot towards a God-built life and family?
Offer prayers for patient trust in God’s plans for your family.
Invoke God’s presence to help navigate the complexities of rebuilding.
Day 4
Isaiah 61:3
This passage speaks of replacing despair with joy and mourning with praise. In the sermon, we were encouraged by the transformation of the Madrigal family's acceptance and rebuilding. For us, the gospel is much the same invitation to transform and renew.
We are prompted to replace our family’s history of performance or silence with authenticity and grace. Through the healing we find in Jesus, we allow ourselves to rejoice in the new life He plants within us. Realizing our homes are more than a place of survival but of joy and abundance marks a pivotal change for our lineage.
What changes have you experienced or need to experience to switch from surviving to thriving?
How does embracing Jesus’s joy transform your day-to-day family life?
How can you practice gratitude for the transformations occurring in your life?
Seek a heart of gratitude for ongoing transformations in your family.
Pray for an enduring spirit of joy and praise in every situation.
Day 5
Psalm 1:3
The imagery of being planted by streams of water, as a tree whose leaf does not wither, conveys enduring life and stability. Pastor's sermon concluded by emphasizing that through Jesus, we have the power to end generational patterns and begin anew.
Our homes can be places where God's love and righteousness sustain us, where our growth defies the changing winds of life's challenges. As we embrace His promises and live out this new reality, we inherit a future for our families that reflects the heart of God — a future of resilience, beauty, and never-failing faith.
Reflect on what it means to be firmly planted in God’s love and righteousness.
Identify areas where God’s sustenance has seen you through difficult times.
How can you ensure that your legacy is one that brings life to the generations that will follow?
Pray for steadfast faith and resilience in every season of life.
Ask God to help you leave an unwithering legacy founded on His promises.
